Applewood Awards $1,000 To The Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship

Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric has chosen Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship as the February winner of the $1,000 Caring Community Giveaway.

Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship_web“It’s an honor to support the Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship. Whenever we can help our schools and the children in our community, we’re overjoyed,” said John Ward, president of Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric.

Lisa was a physical education teacher and the head volleyball coach at Ralston Valley High School from 2000-2013. On March 3, 2013 she lost her life after a two-year battle with cervical cancer. She was 43. To commemorate her life and to ensure others are touched by the legacy she left behind, the Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship was established. The Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship was formed when the family requested contributions in lieu of flowers at Lisa’s funeral services. Those initial contributions gave the fund its start and the students, facility, staff and parents of Ralston Valley High School have done the rest. The band, the choir, the orchestra, student government and many others have contributed to the fund since its Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship_Group photo_webinception in 2013. The combined efforts of so many in the Ralston Valley community have ensured its longevity and stability for years to come.

Over the course of her teaching and coaching career as an employee of Jefferson County Public Schools, Lisa made a positive impact on her students and her athletes. The Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship Board wants to remember the legacy Lisa left behind and Pay It Forward… in the form of college scholarships for RVHS students. Each year, a Ralston Valley High School student-athlete (male and female) will be awarded a $1,000 college scholarship in memory of Lisa.
“We are thrilled to have won this giveaway from Applewood,” said Kristi James, Lisa Nelson Memorial Scholarship Board member. Applewood’s donation will provide another Ralston Valley High School student-athlete $1,000 scholarship.”
