Imagine not having a place to live while you accompany a family member who’s enduring a month-long hospital stay in another city. Applewood Plumbing Heating and Electric has opened Applewood House, a fully-furnished home reserved for families with such a predicament.
“Not having a place to stay during such a trying time is scary,” said John Ward, Applewood’s president. “We take pride in helping the community and the house was available, so it made sense.”
The plan to open Applewood House began after Ward allowed a friend to stay in the home while tending to an ailing family member. John realized it must be a common problem, as he himself had once been in such need.
“People shouldn’t have to worry about where to sleep while their loved ones are in the hospital,” he said.
Applewood House is partnering with St. Anthony Central Hospital and Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in part because of proximity to the home. The hospitals will contact Applewood when they have a family in need of a place to stay. It will serve one family at a time on a case-by-case basis. The home is located in Denver, just east of Sheridan on the Lakewood and Edgewater borders.
“It’s been a real benefit to offer Applewood House as an option when our facility is full,” said Sr. Natalie McDonough, manager of St. Anthony’s Yaffe House, an organization that also finds housing for families in need.
Applewood House will provide amenities such as towels and linens, and appliances such as a washer and dryer, dishwasher and a TV. Recent renovations to the home include new floors and added handicap access.
Ward wants Applewood House stays to provide all the comforts of a personal home.
“We just hope that finding comfort in the accommodations will take their minds of everything else,” he said.
