Handy Candy Clean-Up Tips!

July 6, 2012

Dealing with sticky issues

Candy gives kids sticky fingers, but it still manages to slip from their grasp onto the household furnishings and clothing.

For apparel, use a good presoak and launder items in warm, sudsy water. Be sure the stain is gone before you use the dryer because heat can set the stain for good. If that doesn’t work, presoak again, adding a few drops of ammonia. After 30 minutes, rinse with cool water. Then, soak it again for an hour in a solution of one quart of warm water and one tablespoon of white vinegar. After a thorough rinsing, launder it again following the care tag’s instructions.

For carpeting, scrape the excess candy up with a spoon, and sponge the rest with warm water. Then blot the stain with a white cloth until the stain is gone. If the stain remains, apply white vinegar and let it stand until the stain is gone. Remove any trace of the vinegar by rinsing with water, then pat it with an absorbent cloth until dry.
