DPS Summit Academy Students Visited Applewood
A group of 12 high school students from DPS Summit Academy visited Applewood Plumbing Heating and Electric (www.ApplewoodFixIt.com) on Tuesday, May 8th to explore trade careers.
“Here at Applewood we feel that it is our duty to help guide and teach our young people as they transition from high school,” said John Ward, president of Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric.
“If we can help educate students about what we do and spark their interest in a career we consider that a success.”
The special program included insights about the company, trade careers and a tour of the Applewood headquarters and a technician’s truck. The program was provided to give students an overview as they think about their options and careers following high school.
“One of the most important things that we can do for our high school students is to get them excited and motivated about what their futures can be,” said Elizabeth Doi, a teacher at Summit Academy.
The day started out with breakfast and an informational discussion focusing on the opportunities in the trades with Chery Koury, Applewood’s Talent Acquisition Coordinator. Emmett McCabe, one of Applewood’s Master Electricians, discussed what his work entails, how he progressed in his career and then provided students the opportunity to see how his truck is stocked, organized to ensure he’s able to make the necessary customer home repairs.
John and Josh Ward, the company’s top leadership, personally met with the students and provided a tour of the headquarters explaining the many functions of the business and how a successful trade career can be had. Students were able to observe administrative processes, customer service, dispatch and warehouse roles within the company.
“They will hopefully leave the experience with some great insight, and enthusiasm for their futures. Seeing one of the best companies to work for will give them a target to aim for in preparing for their professional lives,” said Doi.
