[INFOGRAPHIC] Why Your Home is making Strange Noises

From whistling to hissing to cracking, houses can make all sorts of noises. Some are harmless, however, some could be signs of damage to your home’s electrical or plumbing systems. It’s important to understand what your home is trying to tell you—that’s why we’ve put together the most common spooky sounds that you may be hearing in your home.

What are the spooky sounds in my home?

What the sounds in your home are trying to tell you

Here’s what you should know about tapping pipes, banging pipes, a running water sound, a water heater making noise, and your furnace whistling:

  1. Tapping or banging pipes. Changes in pressure can cause pipes to jerk and whack against walls or framework. The solution is to secure the pipes to the framing or cover them with pipe insulation.
  2. Running water. When you hear running water, it is crucial that you check for leaks. First, check to see if your toilet, dishwasher, washing machine, or any other appliance are running. If none of those appliances are on, it could be a broken pipe. If that’s the case, turn your water off and get in touch with Applewood Plumbing right away.
  3. Hissing Noises. This could indicate a gas leak. Do not mess with the gas shutoff. Call your gas company ASAP.
  4. Water heater making a bubbling or cracking sound. Sediment can build up at the bottom of a hot water tank. The tank is probably wearing out and may be failing. Fix this by getting a water heater flush.
  5. Whistling furnace. This is a sign that your furnace is working too hard against a clogged filter. To prevent this, install clean filters regularly.
